CUGNO DI MENDOLA

Perfect location for visiting central Sicily

Cugno di Mendola is located in Resuttano, in the province of Caltanissetta, in a strategic area to visit the main points of interest in central Sicily such as Caltanissetta, Enna, or the charming villages like Petralia and Pietraperzia.

Located on the border between the provinces of Caltanissetta and Palermo, Resuttano is also the perfect starting point to visit the beautiful city of Palermo. It is also just a few kilometers from the Madonie Park.

Resuttano    2 Km | 10 min

Resuttano was influenced by Arab settlements, as evidenced by the presence of a castle of Arab origin. In the 14th century, it belonged to the Ventimiglia family; in 1625, to Giovanbattista Romano Colonna and Ventimiglia Maniaci; and finally to Giuseppe di Napoli, Duke of Campobello and lord of Alessandria della Rocca, who purchased the barony of Resuttano on behalf of his son Gerolamo.

Attractions: Resuttano Castle, Mother Church, Church of the Holy Souls, Church of Saint Paul the Apostle — which houses the statue of the Madonna Addolorata, deeply venerated by the people of Resuttano, whose feast is celebrated on September 15 — and Palazzo Mazzarino.

Caltanissetta    40 Km | 40 min

Caltanissetta is considered a gem of Sicily for its numerous works of art as well as its fascinating history. The historic center is spread along a gentle valley nestled among the hills of the Sicilian hinterland.

Among the religious buildings worth visiting are the Duomo di Santa la Nova, built between 1560 and 1620 and consecrated in 1622. The church is named this way to distinguish it from the Mother Church, built in the 16th century just a short distance from the Pietrarossa fortress. The Abbey of Santo Spirito, one of the most enchanting of its kind throughout Sicily, was commissioned by Roger I of Sicily in the 11th century, occupying the site of a pre-existing Byzantine building and was consecrated in 1153. Today, it houses various works of sacred art considered among the finest in Caltanissetta. The church of Sant’Agata al Collegio was built in the 17th century to replace another pre-existing church also dedicated to Saint Agatha. The church is one of the richest artistically and is attached to the Collegio, the Scarabelli Public Library, and the Music High School. The Triton Fountain, considered by locals as the symbol of the city, is a distinctive group of bronze statues depicting Triton riding a seahorse and threatened by two monstrous creatures. Just outside the city, it is worth visiting the Monument to the Redeemer, located at the top of Monte San Giuliano, right behind Caltanissetta.

Petralia Soprana    37 Km | 27 min

Elected “Borgo dei Borghi” in 2018, Petralia Soprana hides splendid treasures. The Church of Santa Maria di Loreto is located at the end of the street of the same name, in the most panoramic area (and in my personal opinion, the most beautiful) of the town. So beautiful that it has always attracted attention. Here once stood an ancient Saracen fortress, and later a convent built by the Discalced Carmelites with the adjoining Church of Saint Elijah. Behind the church, there is a panoramic terrace, and by continuing along the short path at its foot, you reach the belvedere, which offers an amazing view: not only can you admire the Sanctuary in all its beauty, but also the entire valley, surrounding mountains, and even Mount Etna. The family of the Marquis Pottino di Echifaldo built Palazzo Pottino at the end of the 19th century, and it still houses the heirs of the family today.

Enna    50 Km | 50 min

Enna is located in the heart of Sicily, situated on a plateau about 900 meters above sea level. Because of this central and privileged position, it has been called since ancient times the "navel of the world."

Enna has been continuously inhabited since the Neolithic era. It was home to the Sicani, the Siculi, the Greeks, and the Romans. The ancient Castle, known as the Castle of Lombardia, was built on the site where the Temple of Ceres once stood. Just a short walk from the castle is the Rocca di Cerere, which faces the rising sun and where, in ancient times, the altar for ritual sacrifices was located. From here, the view is magnificent, but it’s not the only panoramic spot in the city. Like a balcony overlooking Sicily, Enna offers breathtaking vistas stretching from Mount Etna to Caltanissetta.

Pietraperzia    40 Km | 40 min

The Madonie Nature Park, established in 1989, is one of the most famous mountain ecosystems in the Mediterranean basin due to the richness of its flora and the remarkable diversity of its vegetation. The highest peak in the park is Pizzo Carbonara, which, at 1979 meters, is the second tallest mountain on the island. Within this mountain range lies Piano Battaglia, a small yet picturesque ski resort. The forests of the Madonie are among the most varied in the Mediterranean. They include beech, elm, holm oak, cork oak, and holly trees. This area is also home to a large number of endemic plants and tree species that grow only in this territory. Inside the park, there are numerous panoramic trails to explore on foot, horseback, or by bicycle. Some must-see destinations include the natural amphitheater of Monte Quacella, Piano Cervi with its red beech forests, the Sanctuary of Madonna dell’Alto, Piano Pomo with holly trees reaching unimaginable heights and sizes, the Vecchiuzzo Cave in Petralia Sottana, the valley of Madonna degli Angeli which runs along the side of Monte San Salvatore, and the bucolic Pomieri Valley. All these trails are easily accessible and well-marked. A specific map of the trails is available in our holiday homes in the area.
